Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Dodge Intrepid, 2002 Chrysler Intrepid, 2002 Chrysler Concorde, and 2002 Chrysler 300M. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Using scan tool, check STARTS SINCE SET counter for DTC P0888. If counter is set at zero, go to next step. If counter is not set at zero, go to step  10.
  2. NOTE: When testing circuits with a test light, ensure test light illuminates brightly. Compare test light brightness of circuits to brightness of test light when connected to direct battery voltage. If circuits do not illuminate with same brightness as direct battery voltage, circuit must be repaired.
  3. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Remove transmission control relay from power distribution center. See Figure. Using test light connected to ground, probe fused B+ circuit at appropriate transmission control relay connector terminal. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If test light illuminates brightly, remove test light and go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, or does not illuminate brightly, repair circuit for open. If fuse is open, ensure to check for short to ground or excessive resistance in circuit.
  4. Disconnect PCM harness connector C4. See Figure. Measure resistance of transmission control relay output circuits between appropriate transmission control relay connector terminal and PCM harness connector C4 terminals No. 19, 28 and 38 using Miller Special Tool (8815). See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If resistance is greater than 5 ohms on any circuit, repair open output circuit. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to next step.
  5. Measure resistance of transmission control relay control circuit between appropriate transmission control relay connector terminal and PCM harness connector C4 terminal No. 18 using Miller Special Tool (8815). If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair open circuit. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to next step.
  6. Measure resistance between ground and transmission control relay ground circuit at appropriate transmission control relay connector terminal. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair open circuit. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to next step.
  7. Measure resistance of transmission control relay control circuit between ground and appropriate transmission control relay connector terminal. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair control circuit for short to ground. If resistance is 5 ohms or greater, go to next step.
  8. Measure resistance of transmission control relay output circuit between ground and appropriate transmission control relay connector terminal. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair output circuit for short to ground. If resistance is 5 ohms or greater, go to next step.
  9. Using fused jumper wire, jumper fused B+ circuit and transmission control relay output circuit together at transmission control relay connector. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Using test light connected to ground, probe transmission control relay output circuits at PCM harness connector C4 terminals No. 19, 28 and 38 using Miller Special Tool (8815). See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If test light illuminates brightly, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, or does not illuminate brightly, replace transmission control relay.
  10. If no other potential causes for DTC P0888 remain, PCM is assumed to be faulty. Repair or replace as necessary. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  11. Conditions necessary to set DTC are not present at this time. Using wiring diagram as a guide, inspect wiring and connectors associated with circuits in question. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Wiggle wires while checking for shorted and open circuits. Repair as necessary. If circuits are okay, testing is complete.
