Fuel Tank Draining

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Dodge Stratus and 2002 Chrysler Sebring. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Two different procedures may be used to drain fuel tank. Lowering fuel tank or by using fuel pump and DRBIII® scan tool. Due to a one-way check valve that is installed into the fuel fill opening fitting at the tank, the tank cannot be drained conventionally (siphoned) at the fill cap. The quickest draining procedure is by lowering the fuel tank. As an alternative procedure, the electric fuel pump may be activated allowing tank to be drained at fuel rail connection. If using fuel pump method, go to next step. If not using fuel pump method, go to step  4.
  2. Before disconnecting fuel line at fuel rail, release fuel pressure. See FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE . Disconnect the fuel line at the fuel rail and remove the plastic retainer from the fuel rail. Take the plastic retainer and install it back into the fuel supply line. Attach end of Special Test Hose (6539) to disconnected fuel supply line.
  3. Position opposite end of this hose tool to an approved gasoline draining station. Activate fuel pump and drain tank until empty. When done, remove the special test hose from the fuel supply hose. Remove the plastic retainer from the special test hose, and reinstall it into the fuel line from the body. Install the fuel line onto the fuel rail. If electric fuel pump is not operating, fuel tank must be lowered to drain fuel. Go to next step.
  4. Release fuel pressure. See FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE . Disconnect negative battery cable. Raise vehicle and support.
  5. Some models are equipped with a separate grounding wire (strap) connecting the fuel fill tube assembly to the body. Disconnect wire by removing screw. Open fuel fill door and remove screws mounting fuel filler tube assembly to body. Do not disconnect rubber fuel fill or vent hoses from tank at this time.
  6. Place a transmission jack under center of fuel tank. Apply a slight amount of pressure to fuel tank with transmission jack. Remove fuel tank mounting strap nuts from mounting strap studs. Lower the tank just enough so that the filler tube fitting is the highest point of the fuel tank. Remove filler tube from fuel tank. Tank will be drained through this fitting. Wrap shop towels around hoses to catch any gasoline spillage. Drain fuel tank into an approved gasoline container.
