Speedometer Inaccurate (Wrong Speedometer Pinion Size For Tire Size)

  1. If vehicle has a 4-speed electronic transmission go to step  3. Otherwise go to next step.
  2. Check if correct speedometer pinion is being used with tires on vehicle. See appropriate ELECTRONIC CONTROLS article in AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS. If the incorrect pinion is in the transmission then replace with correct pinion. If the correct pinion is in the transmission, check the tire size.
  3. Using scan tool, verify correct tire size is programmed into Transmission Control Module (TCM). Set pinion factor to ensure correct tire size is set for proper speedometer operation. See appropriate PINION FACTOR PROCEDURE in COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION. If TCM is properly programmed, tire size is correct, and pinion drive gear is correct, replace vehicle speed sensor.
