Master Cylinder: Removal
- Release vacuum from power brake booster by pumping brake pedal several times with engine off until brake pedal becomes firm. Clean area around master cylinder filler tube and master cylinder fluid reservoir.
- Disconnect negative and positive battery cables. Remove battery thermal guard shield. Remove battery clamp, nut and battery from the battery tray. Remove screw securing engine coolant filler tube to battery tray.
- Remove wiring harness connector from brake fluid level switch in master cylinder brake fluid reservoir. Disconnect primary and secondary brakelines from master cylinder housing. Install sealing plugs in the now open brakeline outlet ports. See Fig 1.
- Clean area where the master cylinder assembly attaches to power brake booster. Use only a solvent such as Mopar® Brake Parts Cleaner or equivalent. Remove the two nuts attaching the master cylinder to the power brake booster. See Fig 2. Slide the master cylinder straight out of the power brake booster.
- Remove vacuum seal located on the mounting flange of the master cylinder. See Fig 3. The vacuum seal is removed from master cylinder by carefully pulling it off the rear of the master cylinder. DO NOT attempt to pry the seal off the master cylinder by inserting a sharp tool between seal and master cylinder casting.
CAUTION:
Master cylinder is used to create a seal for holding vacuum in power brake booster. Vacuum in power brake booster must be released before removing master cylinder. Ensure area around master cylinder filler tube, master cylinder fluid reservoir and master cylinder-to-power brake booster are clean before servicing master cylinder. Area may be cleaned with brake parts cleaner.
CAUTION:
Use a NEW vacuum seal whenever the master cylinder is removed from the power brake vacuum booster.
