Front Hub Assembly & Bearings: Installation
- Install the hub and bearing onto the stub axle and into the steering knuckle until it is squarely seated on the face of the steering knuckle. Install the 4 hub and bearing mounting bolts from the rear of the knuckle. Equally tighten all 4 mounting bolts in a criss-cross pattern until the hub/bearing assembly is squarely seated against front of steering knuckle. Tighten front hub and bearing mounting bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Install the brake rotor on the hub and bearing. Install brake caliper and adapter assembly back over the brake rotor and align with the mounting holes on steering knuckle. See Figure. Install the mounting bolts and tighten to specification. Install the hub nut on the end of the stub axle. With aid of a helper applying the brakes to keep the front hub from turning, tighten the hub nut to specification. See Figure. Install spring washer, nut lock and cotter pin.
- Install wheel and tire assembly and tighten wheel lug nuts to specification. Lower vehicle to the ground. Check the front wheel alignment toe setting and reset if not within specifications. See appropriate WHEEL ALIGNMENT SPECIFICATIONS & PROCEDURES article in SUSPENSION.
CAUTION:
Hub and bearing assembly mounting surfaces on the steering knuckle and stub axle must be smooth and completely free of foreign material or nicks prior to installing hub and bearing assembly. When installing hub and bearing into steering knuckle, be careful not to damage the bearing seal on the outer CV joint. See Fig 1.
