Height-Sensing Proportioning Valve

CAUTION: Aftermarket load leveling or load capacity increasing devices such as air shock absorbers or helper springs must not be used on models with height-sensing proportioning valve. Using load leveling devices will cause height-sensing proportioning valve to inappropriately reduce hydraulic pressure to rear brakes that may result in increased stopping distance.
  1. Ensure all tires are properly inflated, all brakes are in good condition and brake lining is within specification. If all conditions are satisfactory, go to next step. If all conditions are not satisfactory, correct as necessary and go to next step.
  2. Road test vehicle to determine which rear wheel brake is exhibiting premature wheel skid. Raise and support vehicle.
  3. Disconnect the outlet brakeline for the rear wheel brake that is exhibiting premature wheel skid, at the proportioning valve. Disconnect the inlet brakeline for the rear wheel brake that is exhibiting premature wheel skid, at the proportioning valve. The inlet brakeline connection for a given rear wheel will be located directly below the outlet brakeline connection for the same wheel, at the proportioning valve.
  4. Install appropriate fittings from Pressure Test Fittings Kit (6833) into open ports of proportioning valve.
  5. Install Pressure Gauges (C-4007-A) on each pressure test fitting, and bleed air from pressure gauges. Bleed air from brakeline being tested at rear wheel cylinder.
  6. Remove the screw that fastens the proportioning valve actuator lever bracket to the rear differential. Raise the proportioning valve actuator lever to the full-upward position.
  7. Have an assistant hold brake pedal down until inlet pressure at height-sensing proportioning valve is 1000 psi while observing outlet pressure on height-sensing proportioning valve. Outlet pressure should be 675-875 psi. Replace height-sensing proportioning valve if outlet pressure is not within specification. See HEIGHT-SENSING PROPORTIONING VALVE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If outlet pressure is within specification, go to next step.
  8. Remove test equipment. Reinstall brakelines on height-sensing proportioning valve. Tighten brakeline nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Repeat test procedure on remaining rear brake hydraulic circuit. Replace height-sensing proportioning valve if outlet pressure is not within specification. See HEIGHT-SENSING PROPORTIONING VALVE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  9. Remove test equipment. Reinstall brakelines on height-sensing proportioning valve. Reattach proportioning valve actuator lever bracket to the rear differential. Bleed brake system. See BLEEDING BRAKE SYSTEM .
