Bench Bleeding Master Cylinder
NOTE:
Use correct bleeder tubes when bleeding master cylinder. The master cylinder outlet ports vary in size and type, depending on whether the master cylinder is for a vehicle equipped with traction control or not. Traction control equipped master cylinders require the additional use of ISO style flare adapters which are supplied in Fitting Adapter (8822). This is to be used in conjunction with bleeder tubes Special Tool Package (8358).
- Clamp master cylinder in a vise.
- Attach the special tools for bleeding the master cylinder in the following steps:
- For non-traction control equipped master cylinders, thread Bleeder Tubes (8358-1), into each outlet port. See Fig 1. Tighten each bleeder tube to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Position open ends of bleeder tubes into the fluid reservoir as far down as possible.
- For traction control equipped master cylinders, thread one Fitting Adapter (8822-2) into each outlet port. See Fig 1. Tighten fitting adapters to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Next, thread a Bleeder Tube (8358-1), into each adapter. Tighten each bleeder tube to specification. Flex and position open ends of bleeder tubes into the fluid reservoir as far down as possible.
- On all models, using a wooden dowel as a pushrod, slowly depress master cylinder pistons, then release pressure allowing pistons to return to released position. Repeat several times until all air bubbles are expelled. Make sure fluid level stays above tips of bleeder tubes in reservoir while bleeding. Remove bleeder tubes from master cylinder outlet ports, plug outlet ports and install master cylinder reservoir cover.
- Remove master cylinder from vise. Install master cylinder on vehicle. See MASTER CYLINDER under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
CAUTION:
In the following step, only clamp master cylinder by its mounting flange. DO NOT clamp the master cylinder by its piston rod, reservoir, seal or body.
NOTE:
Ensure open ends of bleeder tubes stay below surface of brake fluid once reservoir is filled to proper level. Fill brake fluid reservoir with Mopar® brake fluid or equivalent conforming to DOT 4 specifications. Make sure fluid level is above tips of bleeder tubes in reservoir to ensure no air is ingested during bleeding.
