A/C Compressor Clutch Coil
- Ensure battery is fully charged. Ensure ambient temperature is at least 70°F (21°C). Connect an ammeter, set to 10-amp scale, in series with clutch coil terminal. Using DVOM, set to 20-volt scale, measure voltage across battery and A/C clutch.
- Set A/C controls to A/C mode and blower to low speed. Start engine and operate at normal idle. A/C clutch should engage and clutch voltage should be within 2 volts of battery voltage. If clutch does not engage, check fusible link located between battery and generator.
- A/C clutch coil current draw should be 2.00-4.15 amps with 11.5-12.5 volts at clutch coil. If voltage is greater than 12.5 volts, turn electrical accessories on until voltage is 12.5 volts.
- If A/C clutch coil current draw is zero, coil is open and should be replaced. See COMPRESSOR SERVICING in GENERAL SERVICING. If current draw is 5 amps or more, coil is shorted and should be replaced. If A/C clutch coil voltage is not within 2 volts of battery voltage, check for excessive voltage drop in power supply circuit.
