Axle Shafts: Installation

- To install, reverse removal procedure. Install NEW circlip on axle shaft. Ensure axle shaft is fully seated in transaxle. DO NOT damage CV boots. Check transaxle fluid level and add fluid as necessary. For vehicles equipped with manual transaxles, see SERVICING - M/T article in MANUAL TRANSMISSIONS. - When installing the axle shaft and inner shaft, DO NOT damage the transaxle oil seal with the spline of the shaft. For vehicles equipped with ABS, DO NOT damage the ABS rotor attached to the birfield joint outer race.
- Face the flat side of washer to axle shaft nut and tighten to seat the axle. Remove the nut and flip the washer. See Fig 1 . Tighten axle shaft nut using Axle Shaft Installer (MB990767). If the position of the cotter pin holes do not match, tighten the nut up to maximum specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Install the cotter pin in the first matching holes and bend it securely.
CAUTION:
DO NOT apply pressure to wheel bearing by the vehicle weight to avoid possible damage when castle nut is loosened.
