Disassembly (Inner & Outer CV Joint)

Remove the large tripod joint boot band. Remove the small boot band. Remove the tripod joint case inner shaft assembly. Remove the tripod case. Remove the seal plate. See Fig 1 .

NOTE: Press the seal plate to deform it, then press out the inner shaft.

Using Inner Shaft Remover (MB991248 or MD998801), remove the inner shaft assembly and the seal plate from the tripod joint case. See Fig 2 . Use a NEW seal plate upon installation.
When disassembling right-hand axle on models equipped with 3.0L engines, remove the inner shaft from the center bearing bracket. See Fig 3 .
On all models, remove the dust cover, bracket assembly, outer dust seal and inner dust seal. See Fig 1 . When disassembling right-hand axle on models equipped with 3.0L engines, use Center Bearing Removers (MB990930 and MB990938) to press the center bearing out from the center bearing bracket. See Fig 4 . Remove the center bearing bracket.
On all models, remove the circlip, snap ring and spider assembly. Remove the tripod joint boot and birfield joint assembly. Wrap plastic tape around the spline of the birfield joint assembly so that the tripod joint boot is not damaged when they are removed. See Fig 5 .
On all models, except for the left hand side of the axle shaft on the 3.0L, remove the damper bands. Remove the dynamic damper. See Fig 1 .
Remove the larger birfield joint boot band and the small birfield joint boot band. Remove the birfield joint boot.
