Driver & Passenger-side Air Bag Modules
WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
- Before proceeding, see AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS . Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect negative battery cable and shield cable end. Disconnect positive battery cable. Remove battery from vehicle. Wait at least 60 seconds before continuing.
- Remove appropriate air bag module. See DRIVER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE & CLOCKSPRING or PASSENGER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Place air bag module on ground at least 20 feet away from people or objects. Air bag module trim cover must face upward to prevent movement of air bag module when it is deployed.
- Make a harness with two 20-foot (or longer) wires. Connect wires at one end of this harness to stripped wires of SRS Air Bag Adapter Harness "C" (MB628919 or MR203491) for driver-side air bag, or SRS Air Bag Adapter Harness "B" (MB686560) for passenger-side air bag. See Figure. Wrap adapter harness connections with insulating tape.
- Temporarily connect other end of harness wires together to prevent accidental air bag deployment. Connect appropriate adapter harness to air bag module connector. Thread heavy wire through mounting holes on air bag module and use wire to attach air bag to scrap wheel and tire assembly (trim panel must face up and away from wheel). See Fig 1. Stack 3 more tires without wheels on top of first tire and secure tires together with strong wire. See Fig 2.
- Deploy air bag module by separating ends of harness and connecting ends of 20-foot wires to terminals of a 12-volt battery. Because of extreme heat, wait at least 30 minutes before handling air bag module.
