Clutch Assembly: Removal

- Drain transaxle fluid. Remove air cleaner assembly. Remove battery, and then remove battery tray. Disconnect select and shift cables from transaxle. Disconnect back-up light switch and VSS connectors from transaxle. Remove starter and position aside, leaving harness connected. Remove clutch release cylinder and position aside, leaving hydraulic line attached.
- Remove upper transaxle-to-engine mounting bolts. Install appropriate engine support fixture. Raise and support vehicle. Remove center member assembly and rear roll stopper. Using appropriate jack, slightly raise transaxle assembly to relieve stress from mount. Remove transaxle mount bracket and roll stopper. See Fig 1 and Fig 2 .
- Disconnect stabilizer links at strut side. Disconnect wheel speed sensor electrical connectors, if equipped. Remove brake hose clamp. Disconnect outer tie rod ends and lower control arms. Remove service plug from clutch housing. On pull-type clutch system, insert flat-blade screwdriver into space between clutch release bearing and wedge collar while pushing clutch release fork by hand in direction "A". See Fig 3 .
- Disengage wedge collar from clutch release bearing by prying gently with screwdriver (twist screwdriver 90 degrees). On all models, remove axle shafts. See FWD AXLE SHAFTS - SEBRING COUPE & STRATUS COUPE
article in DRIVE AXLES. Remove transaxle upper oil pan bolt. Support and secure transaxle with appropriate jack. Remove lower transaxle-to-engine mounting bolts. Lower transaxle from vehicle.CAUTION: Do not remove outer flywheel assembly bolt. See Fig 4 . If bolt is removed, flywheel will become unbalanced and damaged.
- Loosen clutch cover-to-flywheel bolts evenly, in a crisscross pattern. Remove clutch cover and clutch disc. Remove clutch release bearing and fork from transaxle.
CAUTION:
Do not insert screwdriver before pushing clutch release fork by hand. Do not use excessive force with screwdriver, or damage to clutch release bearing will result.
