Clutch Assembly: Inspection

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
  1. Check for oil leakage through engine rear main bearing oil seal and transaxle input shaft seal. Check clutch cover diaphragm spring end for wear and uneven height. Replace if worn or if height exceeds .020" (0.5 mm). Check pressure plate and flywheel surfaces for wear, cracks and discoloration. Check strap plate rivets for looseness. Replace clutch cover if necessary.
  2. CAUTION: Do not clean clutch disc in solvent.
  3. Check clutch disc facing for loose rivets, uneven contact, evidence of seizure or contamination. Measure clutch disc rivet depth. Replace clutch disc if rivet depth is less than .012" (0.3 mm). Check torsion spring for play and damage. Replace clutch disc if necessary.
  4. CAUTION: Clutch release bearing is packed with grease from factory. Do not clean in solvent.
  5. Slide clutch disc onto transaxle input shaft. Check splines for binding or excessive play. Clean or repair as necessary. Check clutch release bearing for seizure, damage, noise or improper rotation. Check for wear on contact surfaces of clutch release bearing, clutch release fork and diaphragm spring. Replace components if necessary. On models equipped with 3.0L engine, check clutch release fork shaft for bend or wear. Replace if necessary.
