Balance Shafts: Removal

- Remove timing belt. See TIMING BELT . Remove oil pump. See OIL PUMP under ENGINE OILING. Remove rear timing belt cover. Remove oil pan. Remove balance shaft chain cover, chain guide and tensioner. Remove balance shaft gear and chain sprocket retaining screws. Using wide pry bars, remove chain and sprocket assembly.
- Remove front balance shaft cover and balance shaft gears. Remove rear balance shaft cover and balance shafts. Remove 4 carrier-to-crankcase bolts, and separate balance shaft carrier from engine. Check bearing surfaces and gears for scuffing and wear. Replace as necessary.
