Installation - Cylinder Head

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2005 Dodge Stratus and 2005 Chrysler Sebring. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: The Cylinder head bolts should be examined BEFORE reuse. If the threads are necked down, the bolts must be replaced. See Fig 1.

Necking can be checked by holding a scale or straight edge against the threads. If all the threads do not contact the scale, the bolt should be replaced.

  1. Before installing the bolts, the threads should be coated with engine oil.
  2. Position cylinder head gasket on block.
  3. Install cylinder head on block.
  4. On Non-PZEV equipped  engines tighten the cylinder head bolts in the sequence shown in Fig 2. Using the 4 step torque turn method, tighten according to the following values:
    1. First: All to 34 N.m (25 ft. lbs.)
    2. Second: All to 68 N.m (50 ft. lbs.)
    3. Third: All to 68 N.m (50 ft. lbs.)
      CAUTION: Do not use a torque wrench for the Fourth step.
    4. Fourth: Turn all bolts an additional 1/4 Turn

  5. On PZEV equipped  engines tighten the cylinder head bolts in the sequence shown in Fig 2. Using the 4 step torque turn method, tighten according to the following values:
    1. First: All to 34 N.m (25 ft. lbs.)
    2. Second: All to 82 N.m (60 ft. lbs.)
    3. Third: All to 82 N.m (60 ft. lbs.)
      CAUTION: Do not use a torque wrench for the Fourth step.
    4. Fourth: Turn all bolts an additional 1/4 Turn 
  6. Install rocker arms and camshafts (Refer to ENGINE/CYLINDER HEAD/CAMSHAFT(S)  - INSTALLATION).
  7. Install cylinder head cover (Refer to ENGINE/CYLINDER HEAD/CYLINDER HEAD COVER(S)  - INSTALLATION).
  8. Install rear timing belt cover and timing belt idler pulley (Refer to ENGINE/VALVE TIMING/TIMING BELT / CHAIN COVER(S)  - INSTALLATION).
  9. Install camshaft sprockets (Refer to ENGINE/VALVE TIMING/TIMING BELT/CHAIN AND SPROCKETS - INSTALLATION) .
  10. Install timing belt (Refer to ENGINE/VALVE TIMING/TIMING BELT/CHAIN AND SPROCKETS - INSTALLATION) .
  11. Install upper and lower timing belt covers (Refer to ENGINE/VALVE TIMING/TIMING BELT / CHAIN COVER(S)  - INSTALLATION).
  12. Install crankshaft damper (Refer to ENGINE/ENGINE BLOCK/VIBRATION DAMPER - INSTALLATION) .
  13. Install accessory drive belts (Refer to COOLING/ACCESSORY DRIVE/DRIVE BELTS - INSTALLATION) .
  14. Connect exhaust pipe to exhaust manifold. Torque fasteners to 28 N.m (250 in. lbs.).
  15. Connect air injection connector tube to check valve.
  16. Connect camshaft position sensor electrical connector.
  17. Connect EGR solenoid electrical connector.
  18. Install heater tube support bracket to cylinder head.
  19. Connect heater hose to thermostat housing.
  20. Install intake manifold (Refer to ENGINE/MANIFOLDS/INTAKE MANIFOLD - INSTALLATION) .
  21. Install throttle body air inlet hose and air cleaner housing assembly.
  22. Fill cooling system (Refer to COOLING/ENGINE - STANDARD PROCEDURE) .
  23. Connect negative battery cable.
