Test 3A: FCM, Orc Run-Start Driver Open (Active Code)

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2001 Dodge Grand Caravan, 2001 Dodge Caravan, 2001 Chrysler Voyager, and 2001 Chrysler Town & Country. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: Prior to performing any air bag system test, go to PRETEST INSPECTION & DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE  under DIAGNOSTICS. Perform TEST VER-1: AIR BAG VERIFICATION TEST  after all repairs unless otherwise directed.
  1. Use this procedure to diagnose the following active DTCs:
    • FCM, ORC RUN-START DRIVER OPEN
    • FCM, ORC RUN-START DRIVER OVER CURRENT
    • FCM, ORC RUN-START DRIVER OVER TEMP
    • FCM, ORC RUN-START DRIVER OVER VOLT
    • FCM, ORC RUN-START DRIVER SHORT TO GROUND
    • ORC, LOSS OF IGNITION RUN-START
  1. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Access and disconnect ORC connector. See OCCUPANT RESTRAINT CONTROLLER (ORC)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Connect DRB to DLC. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Connect negative battery cable. On DRB display, read active FCM DTCs. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Read active FCM DTCs again. If DRB displays ORC, RUN-START DRIVER OPEN, go to next step. If DRB displays ORC, RUN-START DRIVER OVER VOLTAGE, go to step  5 . If DRB displays ORC, RUN-START DRIVER SHORT TO GROUND, ORC, RUN-START DRIVER OVER CURRENT or ORC, RUN-START DRIVER OVER TEMP, go to step  6 .
  2. Disconnect negative battery cable. Wait at least 2 minutes. Ensure ORC connector is disconnected. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Connect negative battery cable. Connect test light between ground and ORC harness connector terminal No. 14. See Figure . Cycle ignition switch from ON position to OFF position. On DRB display, read active FCM DTCs. If DRB reads ORC RUN-START DRIVER OPEN, go to next step. If DRB does not read ORC RUN-START DRIVER OPEN, replace ORC.
  3. Access and disconnect front control module. See FRONT CONTROL MODULE (FCM)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Measure resistance of Pink-Orange wire between ORC harness connector terminal No. 14 and FCM connector terminal No. 48. See Figure & Figure . If resistance is less than one ohm, replace FCM. If resistance is more than one ohm, go to next step.
  4. Access and disconnect IPM Black 20-pin connector. See INTELLIGENT POWER MODULE (IPM)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Measure resistance of Pink-Orange wire between ORC harness connector terminal No. 14 and IPM harness connector terminal No. 9. See Figure & Figure . If resistance is less than one ohm, replace IPM. If resistance is more than one ohm, repair open circuit in Pink-Orange wire between ORC harness connector terminal No. 14 and IPM harness connector terminal No. 9.
  5. Measure voltage across battery terminals. If battery voltage is more than 30 volts, check charging system and battery. Repair charging system and battery as necessary. If voltage is less than 30 volts, replace FCM. See FRONT CONTROL MODULE (FCM)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  6. Disconnect negative battery cable and wait at least 2 minutes. Ensure ORC connector is disconnected. Measure resistance between ground and ORC harness connector terminal No. 15. See Figure . If resistance is less than 5 megohms, go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 megohms, replace FCM. See FRONT CONTROL MODULE (FCM)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  7. Access and disconnect IPM Black 20-pin connector. See INTELLIGENT POWER MODULE (IPM)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Measure resistance between ground and IPM harness connector terminal No. 9. See Figure . If resistance is less than 5 megohms, repair short to ground in Pink-Orange wire between ORC and IPM. If resistance is more than 5 megohms, replace IPM.
