CLOCKSPRING Centering

CAUTION: Clockspring failure is possible. If rotating part of clockspring is not positioned properly with steering column and front wheels, rotating tape inside clockspring may be damaged and clockspring failure may result. The following procedure must be used to center clockspring.
  1. Before proceeding, see AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS  . Disable air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM  .
  2. Place front wheels in straight-ahead position. If clockspring is not already removed, remove driver-side air bag module and clockspring. Depress 2 plastic locking pins to disengage lock mechanism. Rotate clockspring rotor in clockwise direction until rotor stops. DO NOT apply excessive torque.
  3. From the end of its travel, rotate rotor 3 full turns in counterclockwise direction. Wires should end up at top of clockspring. Install steering wheel. Tighten steering wheel retaining nut to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  . Install air bag module. DO NOT connect negative battery cable at this time. Activate air bag system and perform system operation check. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM  and SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK  .
