Gearshift Cable: Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Dodge Stratus, 2002 Dodge Neon, 2002 Chrysler Sebring, 2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser, and 2002 Chrysler Neon. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Raise vehicle on hoist. Install cable assembly through floor pan opening and secure to floor pan with grommet plate and one screw. See Fig 5 . Ensure 3 grommet plate studs protrude through cable assembly and floor pan. Tighten screw to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  2. Route transaxle end of cable assembly into engine compartment and over transaxle assembly. Install converter heat shield. See Fig 4 . Lower vehicle. Install gearshift cables to mounting bracket and fasten with NEW clips. Ensure clips are installed flush to bracket. Connect gearshift and crossover cables to gearshift levers at transaxle. See Figure .
  3. Install and tighten 3 grommet plate-to-floor pan nuts. Install gearshift cable to gearshift lever and secure cable to shifter bracket. See Fig 2 . Install clip. Install crossover cable to gearshift lever and secure cable to shifter bracket. See Fig 1 . Install clip. Check adjustment of crossover cable. See SHIFT CROSSOVER CABLE  under ADJUSTMENTS.
  4. Install center console assembly. See Figure . Verify that boot is not pinched at console opening before tightening. Install knob/boot assembly to gearshift lever. Align knob to three o'clock position, push knob down to engage spring and rotate counter clockwise to secure.
  5. Locate boot to console at forward tab and secure with retaining tabs. Return shifter boot to its original position, seated around knob lip. Install the air cleaner/throttle body assembly. See Fig 3 . Connect the accelerator and speed control (if equipped) cables to the air cleaner/throttle body assembly. Install assembly into position. Ensure air cleaner locating slot is engaged to battery bracket tab. Tighten bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  6. Verify throttle body duct is fully seated to intake manifold and tighten clamp. Connect electrical connectors. Connect proportional purge solenoid and crankcase vent hose from throttle body. Connect battery cables.

  1. Raise vehicle on hoist. Install cable assembly through floor pan opening and secure to floor pan with grommet plate and one screw. See Figure . Ensure 3 grommet plate studs protrude through cable assembly and floor pan. Tighten screw to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  2. Route transaxle end of cable assembly into engine compartment and over transaxle assembly. Install converter heat shield. See Figure . Lower vehicle. Install gearshift cables to mounting bracket and fasten with NEW clips. Ensure clips are installed flush to bracket. Connect gearshift and crossover cables to gearshift levers at transaxle. See Figure .
  3. Install and tighten 3 grommet plate-to-floor pan nuts. Install gearshift cable to gearshift lever and secure cable to shifter bracket. See Figure . Install clip. Install crossover cable to gearshift lever and secure cable to shifter bracket. See Figure . Install clip. Check adjustment of crossover cable. See SHIFT CROSSOVER CABLE  under ADJUSTMENTS.
  4. Install center console assembly. See Figure . Verify that boot is not pinched at console opening before tightening. Ensure transaxle shifts properly in all gears. Install center console retaining screws, gearshift lever boot and gearshift lever knob.
  5. Position gearshift boot over the gearshift mechanism and engage tab on mount ring at front to opening in console. Apply hand pressure to engage bosses on mount ring of boot to console opening slots. Position gearshift knob hole over gearshift mechanism and align shift pattern. Strike knob with rubber mallet to engage knob to mechanism. Verify that shift pattern is aligned properly. Install battery tray and battery.
  6. Install the air cleaner assembly. See Fig 1 . Tighten bolts to specification. Connect battery cables.

  1. Raise vehicle on hoist. Install cable assembly through floor pan opening and secure grommet to floor pan. Route transaxle end of cable assembly into engine compartment and over transaxle assembly. Lower vehicle. Install gearshift cables to mounting bracket and fasten with NEW clips. Ensure clips are installed flush to bracket. Connect gearshift and crossover cables to gearshift levers at transaxle. See Figure .
  2. Install gearshift cable to gearshift lever and secure cable to shifter bracket. See Figure . Install clip. Install crossover cable to gearshift lever and secure cable to shifter bracket. See Figure . Install clip. Check adjustment of crossover cable. See SHIFT CROSSOVER CABLE  under ADJUSTMENTS.
  3. Install center console assembly. See Figure . Verify that boot is not pinched at console opening before tightening. Ensure transaxle shifts properly in all gears. Reinstall center console, gearshift lever boot and gearshift lever knob. Connect battery cables.
