PT Cruiser

- Fully apply parking brake. Remove screws attaching center console to floor bracket. Raise center console to access wire connector. Pull upward to remove gearshift lever knob. See Fig 1 . Lift console upward over gearshift lever assembly and parking brake handle. Remove console from vehicle. See Fig 2 .
- Loosen cable adjusting screw on shift crossover cable at gearshift lever assembly. See Figure . The gearshift mechanism and transaxle crossover lever are spring-loaded and self-centering. Alignment pins used in the past are no longer required. Allow gearshift mechanism and transaxle crossover lever to relax in their neutral positions. See Figure .
- To ensure the gearshift lever is in the proper position, place shifter in 3rd or 4th gear if necessary. Tighten cable adjusting screw to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . DO NOT move gearshift lever when tightening cable adjusting screw.
- Ensure transaxle shifts properly in all gears. Reinstall center console, gearshift lever boot and gearshift lever knob. Position gearshift boot over the gearshift mechanism and engage tab on mount ring at front to opening in console. Apply hand pressure to engage bosses on mount ring of boot to console opening slots.
- Position gearshift knob hole over gearshift mechanism and align shift pattern. Strike knob with rubber mallet to engage knob to mechanism. Verify that shift pattern is aligned properly. Install battery tray.
