INSPECTION PROCEDURE 2: Tachometer does not Work.: Diagnosis

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2005 Dodge Stratus and 2005 Chrysler Sebring. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

Required Special Tools: 

  1. STEP 1. Check the tachometer by observing the other meters. 

    Check to see that the speedometer, fuel gauge and water thermometer operate normally.

    Q: Do all other meters operate? 

    YES < other meters all operate >  : Go to Step 2.

    NO < one of the meters do not operate >  : Refer to INSPECTION PROCEDURE 5  .

  2. STEP 2. Using scan tool MB991502, read the diagnostic trouble code (DTC). 
    CAUTION: To prevent damage to scan tool MB991502, always turn the ignition switch to "LOCK" (OFF) position before connecting or disconnecting scan tool.
    1. Connect scan tool MB991502 to the data link connector.
    2. Turn the ignition switch to "ON" position.
    3. Read the MFI system diagnostic trouble code.

    Q: Are MFI system - related DTC(s) set? 

    YES  : Refer to MULTIPORT FUEL INJECTION (MFI) DIAGNOSIS < 2.4L > or MULTIPORT FUEL INJECTION (MFI) DIAGNOSIS < 3.0L > .

    NO:  Go to Step 3.

  3. STEP 3. Check combination meter connector C-102, ECM connector C-116 < M/T-2.4 L >, PCM connector C-114 < A/T-2.4 L > and distributor assembly connector B-22 < 3.0 L > for damage. 

    Q: Are combination meter connector C-102 ECM connector C-116 < M/T-2.4 L >, PCM connector C-117 < A/T-2.4 L >, C-119 < A/T-3.0 L > and distributor assembly connector B-22 < 3.0 L > in good condition? 

    YES  : Go to Step 4.

    NO:  Repair or replace the connector(s). Refer to , HARNESS CONNECTOR INSPECTION . The speedometer should work normally.

  4. STEP 4. Check the wiring harnesses between combination meter connector C-102 (terminal 40) and ECM connector C-116 < M/T-2.4 L > (terminal 58), PCM connector C-114 < A/T-2.4 L > (terminal 43) or distributor assembly connector B-22 < 3.0 L > (terminal 2).

    NOTE: Also check intermediate connectors C-25. If intermediate connectors C-25 is damaged, repair or replace the connector as described in , HARNESS CONNECTOR INSPECTION .

    Q: Are the wiring harnesses between combination meter connector C-102 (terminal 40) and ECM connector C-116 < M/T-2.4 L > (terminal 58), PCM connector C-114 < A/T-2.4 L > (terminal 43) or distributor assembly connector B-22 < 3.0 L > (terminal 2) in good condition? 

    YES  : Go to Step 5.

    NO:  Repair the wiring harness(es). The speedometer should work normally.

  5. STEP 5. Replace and check the combination meter. 

    Q: Does the tachometer operate? 

    YES  : There is no action to be taken.

    NO:  Replace the vehicle speed sensor < M/T > or PCM < A/T >. The tachometer should work normally.
