Breeze, Cirrus & Stratus Sedan - 2000 (Low Speed Fan Control Relay Circuit)
NOTE:
After repairs, perform TEST VER-2A: ROAD TEST FOR NON-OBD II. See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
- Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, actuate low speed radiator fan relay. Low speed radiator fan relay is located in Power Distribution Center (PDC) at driver-side front corner of engine compartment, next to air cleaner. If relay clicks, go to next step. If relay does not click, go to step 4 .
- Turn ignition off. Inspect wiring and connectors for damage. If wiring and connectors are okay, go to next step. If wiring and connectors are not okay, repair or replace as necessary.
- Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, actuate low speed radiator fan relay. Wiggle wiring harness between low speed radiator fan relay and Powertrain Control Module (PCM). PCM is located to left of Power Distribution Center (PDC) in engine compartment, next to air cleaner. If wiggling interrupted relay actuation, repair wiring harness as necessary where wiggling caused problem to appear. If wiggling does not interrupt relay actuation, test is complete.
- Turn ignition off. Remove low speed radiator fan relay. Inspect harness connector and clean/repair as necessary. Measure resistance between terminals No. 84 and 86 at low speed radiator fan relay (component side). If resistance is less than 100 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 100 ohms or more, replace low speed radiator fan relay.
- Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 84 (Light Green Black wire) at low speed radiator fan relay socket in PDC. If voltage is 10 volts or more, go to next step. If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair open in Light Green/Black wire between low speed radiator fan relay and fuse No. 9 (10-amp) in PDC.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) harness connectors. PCM is located to left of Power Distribution Center (PDC) in engine compartment, next to air cleaner. Inspect harness connector and clean/repair as necessary. Measure resistance in Dark Blue/Tan wire between terminal No. 86 at low speed radiator fan relay socket in PDC and terminal No. 55 at PCM harness connector C2. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Dark Blue/Tan wire between low speed radiator fan relay and PCM.
- Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 55 (Dark Blue/Tan wire) at PCM harness connector C2. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, go to next step. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground in Dark Blue/Tan wire between low speed radiator fan relay and PCM.
- If no other potential causes are remaining, replace PCM. After replacing PCM, PCM MUST be reprogrammed. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE PROGRAMMING in appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
