Test 15: Brake Lamp Switch

  1. With scan tool in Inputs/Outputs, read BRAKE LAMP SWITCH state. Press and release brake pedal. If scan tool displayed PRESSED and RELEASED, brake lamp switch is okay. If scan tool did not display PRESSED and RELEASED, go to next step.
  2. Disconnect brake lamp switch harness connector. Using a 12-volt test light connected to ground, check brake lamp switch fused B+ circuit. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If test light illuminates brightly, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate brightly, repair brake lamp switch fused B+ circuit for an open.
  3. Disconnect brake lamp switch harness connector. Connect a jumper wire between brake lamp switch fused B+ and output circuits. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . With scan tool in INPUTS/OUTPUTS, read BRAKE LAMP SWITCH state. If scan tool displays Pressed, replace brake lamp switch. If scan tool does not display Pressed, go to next step.
  4. Disconnect CAB harness connector. Disconnect brake lamp switch harness connector. Check brake lamp switch output circuit for short to voltage or an open. If brake lamp switch circuit is shorted or open, repair brake lamp switch output circuit for short to voltage or for an open. If brake lamp switch output is not shorted or open, replace CAB.
