Park Brake Cable: Removal
NOTE:
For servicing of either the left or right rear park brake cable, perform the following procedure.
- Remove center floor console. See CENTER CONSOLE .
- Lower park brake lever handle. Loosen adjusting nut on park brake cable output cable. See Figure . This will take tension off park brake cables, allowing rear park brake cables to be easily removed from tension equalizer.
- Remove the rear park brake cable, requiring service, from the park brake cable tension equalizer. See Fig 1 .
- For sedan vehicles, pull upward at forward edge of cushion each retainer loop of the rear seat cushion to disengage retainer loops from cups in floor. See Fig 2 . Guide seat belts through loops. Remove rear seat cushion from vehicle.
- For convertible vehicles, push firmly rearward and upward at one attachment point and disengage wire loops from retainers in floor pan. See Fig 3 . Repeat for other attachment point. Separate rear seat cushion from vehicle.
- For all vehicles, remove scuff plates from right and left rear door sills. Scuff plates are attached to door sills using clips on bottom of scuff plates. Remove by carefully prying scuff plate retaining clips out of door sills.
- Fold rear carpeting forward to expose park brake cables.
- Install the box end of a 1/2" wrench over the park brake cable retainer. See Fig 4 . This will compress tabs on park brake cable retainer, allowing cable to be removed from console bracket. From under carpet, grasp park brake cable housing and pull cable straight out of console bracket.
- Raise vehicle and support vehicle. Remove rear wheel and tire assembly from the side of the vehicle requiring park brake cable service.
- Remove rear caliper, park brake shoes, rotor and rear hub and bearing assembly. See PARK BRAKE SHOES , REAR HUB & BEARING ASSEMBLY , REAR BRAKE ROTOR and REAR BRAKE CALIPER . Remove the park brake cable from the park brake shoe actuating lever.
- Place a 1/2" wrench on cable housing and compress locking tabs on park brake cable retainer to remove park brake cable from rear brake adapter. See Fig 5 .
- Remove the fasteners securing the 2 brake cable routing clips to the frame rail. Remove the park brake cable and sealing grommet from the floor pan of the vehicle. See Fig 6 .
NOTE:
Fabric covered cushions are serviced as an assembly.
NOTE:
Special care should be taken when removing rear seat cushion to prevent damage to the cushion frame. Remove cushion at attachment areas, not at wing area.
