Pretest Inspection
CAUTION:
Always turn ignition switch to OFF position before disconnecting or connecting any control module connector or battery. When battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION before disconnecting battery.
Before proceeding with TROUBLE SHOOTING or SYSTEM TESTS, the following precautions must be followed:
- Vehicle must have a fully charged battery and functional charging system.
- Only perform test steps indicated. It is not always necessary to perform all steps in a test.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position before disconnecting or connecting any module or component.
- Use extreme care when connecting or disconnecting components during testing to prevent accidental grounding or shorting.
- DO NOT use a test light in place of a DVOM, unless instructed otherwise.
- Always disconnect scan tool after use or when disconnecting/charging battery.
- Ensure no Programmable Communication Interface (PCI) bus messages are stored and no body related Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) exist. See SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM in appropriate BODY CONTROL MODULES article.
Check fuse No. 6 (40-amp), located in Power Distribution Center (PDC). PDC is located in engine compartment, near air cleaner. Check fuses No. 6 and 15 (10-amp), located in instrument panel junction block. See Fig 1 . Instrument panel junction block is located on left end of instrument panel. Connect scan tool to 16-pin Data Link Connector (DLC), located under left side of instrument panel. If a PCI bus fault message is present, it must be repaired before proceeding with any other repair procedures.
