Description & Operation

Rear window defogger system consists of a rear glass with 2 vertical bus bars, and a series of horizontal grid lines on inside surface. Sebring convertible is also available with heating grids behind outside rearview mirror faces. A push button control switch integrated into Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning (HVAC) controller turns rear window defogger and heated mirrors on and off. A timer is integrated in Body Control Module (BCM).

BCM controls a rear window defogger relay, located in instrument panel junction block, on left end of instrument panel. Circuit protection is provided by fuses No. 6 and 15 (10-amp), located in instrument panel junction block and fuse No. 6 (40-amp), located in Power Distribution Center (PDC). PDC is located in engine compartment, near air cleaner. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .

Actuating control switch sends a ground signal to BCM. BCM actuates rear window defogger relay, allowing current to flow for 15 minutes through grid lines and heating grids behind outside rearview mirror faces. Each subsequent actuation provides a 10-minute current flow until either defogger button is pressed off or ignition switch is turned to OFF position. Rear window defogger is not meant to melt snow. Remove snow before turning on defogger. An indicator light, located on switch, illuminates when defogger button is pressed on.
