Horn Inoperative
- Check fuse No. 16 (40-amp) in Power Distribution Center (PDC) and fuse No. 8 (20-amp) in junction block. Junction block is located under left front of instrument panel. If fuse No. 16 is blown, check for short to ground in Pink/White wire between junction block and PDC. See appropriate wiring diagram in POWER DISTRIBUTION article in WIRING DIAGRAMS. If fuse No. 8 is blown, go to step 7
. If fuses are okay, go to next step.
- Remove horn relay from junction block. Using DVOM, measure resistance between ground and horn relay terminal No. 7 in junction block while pressing horn switch. See Fig 1
. If continuity does not exist, go to step 4
. If continuity exists, go to next step.
- Connect jumper wire between horn relay terminals No. 8 and 10 in junction block. If horns do not sound, go to step 5
. If horns sound, replace horn relay.
- Remove air bag/horn pad from steering wheel. See HORN SWITCH
under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Using DVOM, measure resistance between horn switch connector terminals while pressing horn switch. If continuity does not exist, replace air bag/horn pad. See REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in lemon-25(R) AIR BAG SERVICE & REPAIR MANUAL, DOMESTIC & IMPORTED MODELS. If continuity exists, repair open in wiring between horn switch and horn relay. See WIRING DIAGRAMS

- Install horn relay. Disconnect horn electrical connectors. Using DVOM, measure voltage between horn harness terminals while pressing horn switch. If battery voltage exists, replace horn(s). See HORNS
under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If battery voltage does not exist, go to next step.
- Measure voltage between Dark Green/Red wire terminal at horn connector and ground while pressing horn switch. If battery voltage exists, repair horn ground circuit. If battery voltage does not exist, repair open in Dark Green/Red wire(s) between horn and horn relay.
- Remove fuse No. 8 (20-amp). Set DVOM to measure amperage. Connect DVOM across fuse terminals. Check amperage draw of horn circuit. If amperage draw is greater than 20 amps with horn switch depressed, circuit is grounded between horn relay and horn. Go to step 10
. If amperage draw is greater than 20 amps without pressing horn switch, circuit is grounded between fuse and horn relay. Go to next step.
- Monitor amperage draw on DVOM. Remove horn relay from junction block. If amperage draw drops to zero amps, horn switch, circuit or Body Control Module (BCM) is shorted. See WIRING DIAGRAMS
. If amperage draw does not drop, go to next step.
- Monitor amperage draw on DVOM. Reinstall horn relay. Disconnect both horns. If amperage draw does not drop with both horns disconnected and horn switch pressed, go to step 11
. If amperage draw drops, go to next step.
- Monitor amperage draw on DVOM. Ensure one horn connector is disconnected and other horn connector is connected. If amperage draw drops with one horn disconnected and other horn sounds, reverse procedure, and replace faulty horn. See HORNS
under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
- Ensure both horn connectors are disconnected. Measure resistance between horn relay terminal No. 10 and ground. See Fig 1
. If continuity does not exist, no problem is indicated at this time. Test is complete. If continuity exists, repair short to ground in Dark Green/Red wire. Retest amperage draw and resistance.
