Rear Brake Caliper, Pads & Rotor: Inspection

  1. Replace pads if thickness is less than .08" (2 mm). Measure rotor thickness in 8 or more locations. Replace rotor and pads if rotor thickness is less than specification. See appropriate DISC BRAKE SPECIFICATIONS  table.
  2. To measure rotor runout, tighten rotor to hub with lug nuts. Measure rotor runout at approximately .2" (5 mm) from outer circumference of rotor. If runout is .003" (.08 mm) or more, using chalk, mark rotor and wheel stud closest to mark made on rotor for installation reference. Remove rotor.
  3. Check hub runout and axial play to determine if problem is with hub or with rotor. If hub is okay, reinstall rotor with chalk mark 180 degrees offset from marked stud. Remeasure runout. If changing position of rotor on hub does not eliminate runout, resurface rotor using an on-the-car- lathe. Rotors machined on the vehicle often have less rotor runout than a new rotor.
