Tachometer Inoperative

  1. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC) located under left side of instrument panel, left of steering column. Check for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC). If DTC 35 is indicated, go to appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If no DTCs are set, go to next step.
  2. Remove instrument cluster and disconnect instrument cluster connectors C-04, C-05 and C-06. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER GAUGES  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Using DVOM, measure voltage between instrument cluster connector C-05 terminal No. 24 (White wire) and ground. See Figure . Turn ignition on. If voltage is 4.8-5.2 volts, go to next step. If voltage is not 4.8-5.2 volts, check for poor connections, short to ground or open in White wire between Powertrain Control Module (PCM) and instrument cluster. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Repair as necessary.
  3. Using DVOM, measure voltage between instrument cluster connector C-06 terminal No. 10 (Black/White wire) and ground. If battery voltage is indicated, go to next step. If battery voltage is not indicated, check for poor connections or open in White wire between ignition switch and instrument cluster. Check fuse No. 8 (10-amp) in junction block. If fuse is blown, check for short to ground in White wire. Repair as necessary.
  4. Using DVOM, measure resistance between instrument cluster connector C-04 terminal No. 44 (Black wire) and ground. If continuity is indicated, recheck operation of tachometer. If tachometer is still inoperative, replace tachometer. If continuity is not indicated, check for poor connections or open in Black wire between ground and instrument cluster. Repair as necessary.
