Rear Drum Brakes & Shoes: Inspection

NOTE: If shoe replacement is necessary, replace both right and left shoes as a set to prevent car from pulling to one side during braking.
  1. Measure wear of brake lining at most worn area. Minimum thickness is .039" (1.0 mm). If thickness is less than .039" (1.0 mm), replace shoe and lining assembly. If there is a significant difference in brake lining thicknesses between right and left shoe, inspect wheel cylinder piston.
  2. Measure inside diameter of hub and drum at 2 or more locations. Maximum diameter is 9.0" (230.6 mm). If diameter is greater than 9.0" (230.6 mm) or is badly scored or out of balance, replace brake drum and shoes.
