Parking Brake Cables

NOTE: Vehicles use a bent nail type parking brake cable equalizer. See Fig 1 . The bent nail tension equalizer is to be used only one time to set the parking brake cable tension. If the parking brake cables require adjustment during the life of the vehicle, a new tension equalizer must be installed before doing the parking cable adjustment procedure.
  1. On A/T models, remove shift knob from shifter. The gear shift knob is attached to the shifter using a set screw. See Fig 2 . On M/T models, push shift boot down to expose clips on gearshift knob and roll pin on shifter handle. See Fig 3 . Pry the clips on the shifter knob away from the roll pin in the shifter handle using a flat-blade pry tool. Remove the shifter knob from the shifter handle by pulling the shifter knob straight up.
  2. On all models, remove shifter boot or PRNDL plate from center console. Front/floor console must be removed to access cables. Remove front center console-to-forward console screws. Raise parking brake lever sufficiently to provide clearance for console removal. Remove center console. Lower parking brake lever.
  3. Loosen parking brake lever output cable adjusting nut. See Fig 4 . Using screwdriver, remove parking brake lever output cable retainer from cable and parking brake cable tension equalizer (discard retainer). See Fig 5 . Remove tension equalizer and discard.
  4. Install NEW tension equalizer and cable retainer. Ensure cable retainer is closed and securely latched. Ensure parking brake lever is fully released. For vehicles with rear drum brakes, tighten output cable adjusting nut until 0.5" (12 mm) of thread is past top edge of adjusting nut. For vehicles with rear disc brakes, tighten output cable adjusting nut until 1.0" (26 mm) of thread is past top edge of adjusting nut.
  5. Fully apply parking brake lever (22 clicks) one time, then release. Ensure rear wheels rotate freely without dragging. Ensure parking brake lever action is firm with a maximum of 21 clicks for all models. Install center console. Install shifter boot or PRNDL plate. Install shift knob.
