Rear Drum Brake Shoes: Installation

  1. Lubricate shoe contact area on backing plate with high temperature brake lubricant. Install parking brake cable in parking brake lever of trailing shoe. Install trailing shoe and hold-down clip. Install leading shoe and automatic adjuster mechanism as an assembly. Install hold-down clip for leading shoe.
  2. Install lower return spring. Install upper return spring (Blue spring on right side, and Green spring on left side) on leading shoe, then on trailing shoe. Install automatic adjuster lever spring onto trailing shoe, then to adjuster mechanism. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure.
  3. Install wheels. Tighten wheel nuts in crisscross sequence to half torque, then repeat tightening sequence to full specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  . Lower vehicle and operate brake pedal to ensure a firm feel. Road test vehicle.

  1. Lubricate the 6 brake shoe contact areas on backing plate with high temperature brake lubricant. Install the wave washer on the pin of the parking brake actuating lever. Install the trailing brake shoe on the parking brake actuating lever.
  2. Install the trailing brake shoe on the brake support plate. Install the attaching pin and hold down spring for the trailing brake shoe. Install the retaining clip attaching the parking brake actuating lever to the trailing brake shoe. Install the automatic adjuster on the trailing brake shoe and parking brake actuating lever.
  3. Install the leading brake shoe on the brake support plate. Install the attaching pin and hold down spring for the leading brake shoe. Install the brake shoe lower return spring. Install the upper return spring on the brake shoes. Install the automatic adjuster actuating lever and actuating spring on the leading brake shoe.
  4. Manually adjust the brake shoe assemblies out as far as possible but not so far as to interfere with the brake drum installation. Install the rear brake drums on the hubs. Adjust rear brake shoes. See REAR BRAKE SHOES  under ADJUSTMENTS.
  5. Install wheels. Tighten wheel nuts in crisscross sequence to half torque, then repeat tightening sequence to full specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  . Lower vehicle and operate brake pedal to ensure a firm feel. Road test vehicle.
