Rear Brake Rotor: Inspection
- Inspect rear brake rotor for damage or scoring. If checking rear brake rotor runout, reinstall rear brake rotor onto rear hub assembly so reference marks are aligned. Reinstall lug nuts to secure rear brake rotor on rear hub assembly.
- Using dial indicator, check rear brake rotor runout 1" (25.4 mm) inward from outer edge of front brake rotor. Rear brake rotor runout should be checked on both sides of rear brake rotor. Rear brake rotor runout should not exceed specification. See DISC BRAKE SPECIFICATIONS .
- If rear brake rotor runout exceeds specification, remove rear brake rotor from rear hub assembly. Ensure rear brake rotor-to-rear hub assembly surface on rear hub assembly is clean. Using dial indicator, check rear hub assembly runout at area just outside of wheel lug nut studs. Rear hub assembly runout should be within specification. See DISC BRAKE SPECIFICATIONS table.
- If rear hub assembly runout exceeds specification, replace rear hub assembly. If rear hub assembly runout does not exceed specification, but rear brake rotor runout exceeds specification, resurface or replace rear brake rotor. Ensure rear brake rotor thickness is not less than minimum refinish thickness. See DISC BRAKE SPECIFICATIONS table.
- Using dial indicator, check rear brake rotor thickness variation at 12 equal locations 1" (25.4 mm) inward from outer edge of rear brake rotor. Rear brake rotor thickness variation should not exceed specification. See DISC BRAKE SPECIFICATIONS table.
- If rear brake rotor thickness variation exceeds specification, resurface or replace rear brake rotor. Ensure rear brake rotor thickness is not less than minimum refinish thickness. See DISC BRAKE SPECIFICATIONS table.
- Measure diameter of drum at parking brake shoe area on rear brake rotor. Replace rear brake rotor if drum diameter exceeds drum diameter stamped on front side of rear brake rotor.
