Without ABS

  1. Rear wheel lock-up or skidding indicates faulty proportioning valve. To identify proportioning valve, see bar code label. Road test vehicle to determine which rear brake system is faulty.
  2. Disconnect brakeline from suspect proportioning valve. See Fig 1 . Remove proportioning valve from rear brakeline. Install Pressure Test Fitting (8187) on rear brake tube. Install proportioning valve into pressure test fitting. Install Pressure Test Fitting (8187-2) into proportioning valve. Tighten tube nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  table. Connect brakeline to pressure test fitting. Install Pressure Gauge (C-4007-A) into each pressure test fitting.
  3. Bleed hoses and gauges. Have an assistant depress and hold pressure on brake pedal. Note and record pressure gauge readings. If inlet or outlet pressure readings DO NOT agree with specifications, replace proportioning valve. See BRAKE PRESSURE  table.
BRAKE PRESSURE

Inlet Pressure Split Point/Slope (1) Rear Brake Outlet Pressure
1000 psi 500 psi/.43 600-700 psi
(1) Split point is when proportioning valve changes rear brake pressure to prevent skidding. Slope is the pressure differential (percentage ratio) between front and rear brakes.
