Rear Drum Brake Shoes: Removal

- Raise and support vehicle. If necessary, insert screwdriver through automatic adjuster access hole and rotate quadrant towards front of vehicle to back off brake adjuster. Remove brake drum. Remove automatic adjuster lever spring and both shoe return springs. Remove leading shoe hold-down clip. See Figure . Remove leading shoe and automatic adjuster mechanism as an assembly.
- Remove trailing shoe hold-down clip. Remove trailing shoe with parking brake actuating lever. Disconnect parking brake cable from parking brake lever. To separate automatic adjuster from leading shoe, extend and rotate adjuster as indicated. See Figure .
NOTE:
Parking brake actuating lever is permanently attached to trailing brake shoe. If replacing brake shoes, parking brake actuating lever and trailing shoe must be replaced as an assembly. Trailing shoes for right and left wheels are not interchangeable. Ensure parking brake actuating lever on trailing shoe is positioned under brake shoe web.
