Removal & Installation: Camshaft: Inspection

  1. Inspect camshaft bearing journals for damage and binding. Light scratches can be removed with 400 grit sandpaper. If journals are binding, also check cylinder head for damage. Check cylinder head oil passages for clogging.
  2. Check cam lobes for abnormal wear and damage. Replace if defective. Measure lobe wear and replace if out of tolerance. Wear limit is 0.010" (0.254 mm). See Figure. Also see CAMSHAFT  table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS. If lobes show signs of pitting on flank, nose or base circle, replace camshaft.
