Removal & Installation: Engine: Removal
NOTE:
It is not necessary to disconnect hoses to remove A/C compressor, power steering pump and bracket assembly.
- Remove windshield wiper arm assembly. See appropriate WIPER/WASHER SYSTEMS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. Remove front deck garnish. Disconnect washer hose. Mark hood to hinge position for installation reference. Remove hood. Release fuel pressure. See FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE . Ensure engine is cool. Remove coolant fill cap. Remove drain plug and drain engine coolant. Remove overflow hose. On 1995 models, disconnect reserve tank water level switch connector. On all models, remove reserve tank and bracket.
- Mark upper and lower radiator hose and hose clamps for installation referees. See Fig 2. Remove clamps from upper and lower radiator hose. Remove upper and lower radiator hose. Remove and plug transaxle fluid cooler lines. Remove upper radiator insulators. Remove radiator. See Fig 1. Disconnect Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) connectors. Remove front exhaust pipe and gasket. Support engine using engine support fixture. Remove transaxle. See appropriate AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION REMOVAL article.
- Disconnect power steering pressure switch and Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor connectors. Disconnect A/C compressor, fuel injector and Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) gauge unit connectors. Disconnect ECT sensor, ignition coil and Idle Air Control (IAC) motor connectors. Disconnect Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor, alternator wiring harness and Throttle Position (TP) sensor connectors. Disconnect control wiring harness and relay box connectors.
- Remove accelerator cable. Disconnect brake booster vacuum hose and purge hose. Disconnect fuel supply line from fuel rail. On 1995 models, disconnect fuel return line from fuel rail. On all models, disconnect heater hose. Remove power steering pump cover. Remove accessory drive belts. Unbolt A/C compressor with hoses connected. Suspend A/C compressor aside.
- Support engine using floor jack. Remove engine support fixture, used to support engine when transaxle was removed. Attach engine hoist to engine. Place a floor jack under oil pan. Place a piece of wood between oil pan and floor jack. Jack up engine to remove weight of engine off engine mount. Remove upper and lower engine mounts. Remove power steering pump and bracket assembly. Using wire, suspend power steering pump and bracket assembly. Ensure all cables, hoses and harness connectors are disconnected from engine. Lift and remove engine.
