Crankshaft Rear Oil Seal: Removal

Remove transaxle. See appropriate AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION REMOVAL or MANUAL TRANSMISSION REMOVAL article. On A/T, remove flexplate backing plate bolts. Remove backing plate and flex plate. On M/T, remove flywheel. On either transaxles, make a notch in oil seal lip with a knife. Insert a flat-tipped screwdriver wrapped in a shop towel into notched section of oil seal and lever out oil seal. Ensure not to damage crankshaft and oil seal case. See Figure. Remove rear crankshaft seal.
