Piston Rings

CAUTION: Using ring expander to install oil rings can break oil rings.
NOTE: Upper and lower compression rings are different in shape.
  1. Check ring end gap and side clearances. See PISTONS , PINS & RINGS table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS. Position ring gaps in proper locations before installation. See Fig 2. Oversized oil rings are color coded. Standard oil ring is not color coded. A 0.020" (.50 mm) oversize oil ring is Blue. A 0.039" (1 mm) oversize oil ring is Yellow.
  2. Install oil ring spacer. Install upper oil ring and lower oil ring. After installing oil rings, ensure that they move smoothly in either direction. Install compression rings with side marks facing up. Arrange compression rings and oil rings as indicated. See Figure and Figure .
