Piston & Rod Assembly

NOTE: Keep all components of piston and rod assembly together.
NOTE: Note direction of connecting rod installation on piston before removal.
  1. To remove piston and connecting rod assembly, mark cylinder number on side of connecting rod for installation reference. To remove piston pin, insert Piston Pin Setting Tool (MD998780) push rod in to front of piston. Front of piston is marked with an arrow on top of piston. See Figure. With arrow pointing up, place piston on to piston pin setting tool base. See Figure. Press piston pin out of piston in opposite direction of arrow.
  2. Measure clearance between piston ring and ring groove. Replace as necessary. See PISTONS, PINS & RINGS  table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS. Measure piston ring end gap. Replace as necessary. See PISTONS, PINS & RINGS  table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS.
  3. When installing piston pin, measure piston pin hole length (Dimension "A"), distance between piston bosses (Dimension "B"), piston pin length (Dimension "C") and connecting rod end width (Dimension "D"). See Figure. Calculate value "L" using following formula; "L" = (("A" - "C") - ("B" - "D")) / 2. Insert push rod in piston pin and attach guide "A" to push rod. Put together piston and connecting rod with their front marks on same side. Apply engine oil to piston pin. Insert guide "A" in to front of piston. Screw guide "B" into guide "A" until distance between guides is equal to value "L" plus 0.118" (3 mm). See Figure.
  4. Place piston on base with piston front mark pointing up. See Figure. Press piston pin. A force of 1652-3867 lbs. (7350-17,200 N) should be necessary for pressing piston pin. If force required to press in piston pin is less then specified, replace piston or piston pin.
  5. To install pistons, coat piston and rings with oil. Pistons must be installed with arrow on top of piston pointing toward front of engine. See Figure. If installing new connecting rod caps, position locking bearing notches on same side. See Figure. After installation, check connecting rod thrust clearance.
