Crankshaft & Main Bearings

1. To install correct main bearings, measure crankshaft journal diameter. On 1995-96 models, also check crankshaft journal identification color (if equipped with an aftermarket part). See Fig 7. On 1997 models, also check crankshaft journal identification mark. See Fig 8. Measurement along with journal identification color will indicate crankshaft journal classification. See appropriate MAIN BEARINGS IDENTIFICATION table. Each classification has 3 different replacement main bearings, each identified by a different color (1995), color and mark (1996) or mark (1997). See Fig 9-Fig 11 . Check cylinder block main bearing bore identification mark to match correct bearing. Cylinder block main bearing bore identification marks are stamped on engine block. See Fig 12-Fig 13 . Select replacement main bearing from table.
2. Bearings with oil groves should be installed on cylinder block side. Bearings without oil groves should be installed on bearing cap side. Install thrust bearings on both sides of No. 3 journal with grooves facing outward. Carefully install main bearing cap with arrows toward front of engine.
3. Apply oil to bearing cap bolt threads and bearing surfaces. Progressively tighten bolts to specification in sequence. See Fig 16. After installing crankshaft bearings and main bearing main bearing cap, check crankshaft end play. Repair or replace as necessary. When installing crankshaft, apply a small amount of engine oil to lip of NEW rear crankshaft oil seal and apply a 1/8" bead of silicone rubber adhesive sealant along oil seal case. See Figure. Install crankshaft oil seal by tapping it into place using Seal Installer (MD998718).
