Test NS-9A - Repairing No Crank Condition

NOTE: For connector terminal identification, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION . For wiring diagram, see WIRING DIAGRAMS - 2.0L & 2.4L article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. After each repair, perform TEST VER-1.
  1. If vehicle is equipped with M/T, go to TEST NS-9B. Ensure transmission is in Park position. Using scan tool, read Park/Neutral Position (PNP) switch sense. If scan tool does not display PARK, repair open PNP switch case ground circuit. If scan tool displays PARK, go to next step.
  2. Remove starter relay. Using scan tool in voltmeter mode, check voltage on starter relay connector terminal "C" on FJ22 and F24S bodies (Black/Red wire), or "B" on JA and PL bodies (Red wire). If voltage is less than 11.6 volts, repair open Black/Red wire or Red wire. If voltage is more than 11.6 volts, go to next step.
  3. While holding ignition key in Crank position, check voltage on starter relay connector terminal "A" (Black/Red wire on FJ22 and F24S bodies; Yellow/Orange wire on JA body; Yellow/Black wire on PL body). If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair open Black/Red wire, Yellow/Orange wire or Yellow/Black wire. If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step.
    WARNING: Engine may crank in following step. Keep away from moving engine parts.
  4. Ensure transmission is in Park position and parking brake is set. Briefly connect a jumper wire between starter relay connector terminals "B" (Black/Yellow wire) and "C" (Black/Red wire) on FJ22 and F24S bodies, "D" (Brown wire) and "B" (Red wire) on JA body, or "E" (Brown wire) and "B" Red wire on PL body. If starter motor cranks, go to step 9). If starter motor does not crank, go to next step.
  5. If starter solenoid clicks when jumper wire is connected, go to step 7). If starter solenoid does not click when jumper wire is connected, disconnect jumper wire. Disconnect starter relay output wire (Black/Yellow wire on FJ22 and F24S bodies; Brown wire on JA and PL bodies) from starter solenoid. Go to next step.
  6. Using an external ohmmeter, check resistance of starter relay output wire (Black/Yellow wire on FJ22 and F24S bodies; Brown wire on JA and PL bodies) between starter solenoid connector terminal No. 1 and starter relay connector terminal "B" on FJ22 and F24S bodies, or "D" on JA and PL bodies. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open Black/Yellow wire or Brown wire. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step.
  7. Reinstall starter relay. Check battery cables for voltage drop. If either cable has a voltage drop of more than 0.2 volt, replace battery cable(s). If battery cables are okay, go to next step.
  8. Attempt to manually rotate crankshaft 360 degrees. If crankshaft does not rotate, repair engine mechanical problem. If crankshaft rotates, replace starter motor.
  9. If starter motor cranks in step 4), use scan tool in ohmmeter mode to check resistance of starter motor relay connector terminal "D" on FJ22 and F24S bodies (Black/Yellow wire), or "C" in JA and PL bodies (Black/White wire on JA body; Brown/Yellow wire on PL body). If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open Black/Yellow wire, Black/White wire or Brown/Yellow wire. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace starter relay.
