Evaporative Emission Purge Solenoid (Avenger, Sebring & Talon)

  1. Disconnect evaporative emission purge solenoid valve electrical connector and vacuum hoses. Identify vacuum hoses for reassembly. On Avenger, Sebring and Talon non-turbo, evaporative emission purge solenoid is located near evaporative emission canister. See Fig 1. On Talon turbo, evaporative emission purge solenoid is located near rear center of engine compartment. See Figure.

  2. Connect a hand-held vacuum pump to evaporative emission purge solenoid valve hose vacuum nipple "A". See Fig 3 or Fig 2. Apply vacuum to solenoid. Vacuum should hold. If vacuum holds, go to next step. If vacuum does not hold, replace evaporative emission purge solenoid valve.
  3. Using jumper wires, connect evaporative emission purge solenoid valve to battery voltage. With battery voltage applied to solenoid valve, apply vacuum to solenoid valve nipple "A". See Fig 3 or Fig 2. Vacuum should leak. If vacuum leaks, go to next step. If vacuum does not leak, replace evaporative emission purge solenoid valve.
  4. Using a DVOM, measure resistance across evaporative emission purge solenoid valve terminals. See EVAPORATIVE EMISSION PURGE SOLENOID VALVE RESISTANCE table. If resistance is not within specification, replace evaporative emission purge solenoid valve. If resistance is within specification, evaporative emission purge solenoid valve is functioning properly.
