Instrument Cluster Gauge Tests

CAUTION: DO NOT touch printed circuit board when inserting test probe into "A" terminal of gauge during resistance test.
  1. Before removing instrument cluster to check a suspected faulty gauge, perform this test. Locate and disconnect harness connector from suspected faulty gauge sending unit. Ground sending unit harness connector using 12-volt test light with a 3.4-watt bulb. Turn ignition on. Test light should illuminate slightly and suspect gauge needle should move.
  2. If test light comes on but gauge needle does not move, replace gauge. If test light does not come on and gauge needle does not move, repair wiring harness as necessary. If test light comes on and gauge needle moves, go to next step.
  3. To check for excessive resistance in gauge, remove instrument cluster to gain access to gauge. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. To prevent false reading, remove ignition terminal screw/nut from area "A" on coolant temperature and fuel gauges. See Fig 1 or Figure .
  4. On all gauges, use ohmmeter to measure resistance between specified gauge terminals. See GAUGE RESISTANCE table. See Fig 1 , Fig 3 , Figure or Figure . Replace gauge if readings are not as specified.
