Timing Chain: Removal
- Remove timing chain cover. See TIMING CHAIN COVER
. Check timing chain stretch to determine if component replacement is required.NOTE: When applying torque to camshaft sprocket bolt, DO NOT allow crankshaft to move. If necessary, hold crankshaft.
- Place torque wrench on camshaft sprocket bolt. Proper amount of torque must be applied in direction of engine rotation. Apply 30 ft. lbs. (41 N.m) torque with cylinder heads installed or 15 ft. lbs. (20 N.m) with cylinder heads removed.
- Once torque is applied, position measuring scale at edge of timing chain so movement can be measured. Apply same amount of torque in opposite direction and note amount of chain movement. If movement exceeds 1/8" (3.175 mm), replace timing chain.
- Rotate crankshaft to align timing marks. See Figure . Remove camshaft sprocket bolt. Remove cup washer, camshaft sprocket, timing chain and crankshaft sprocket.
