Fifth Avenue, Imperial & New Yorker
- To begin test starting sequence, simultaneously press and hold both TRIP and TRIP RESET buttons while starting engine. Release both buttons after engine starts. If display comes on, go to step 3). If display does not come on, check all fuses.
- If fuses are good, remove instrument cluster. Refer to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER R & I under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Check for battery voltage at cluster Red connector terminal No. 2 (Pink/Light Blue wire). See Figure . If voltage exists, replace instrument cluster. If voltage does not exist, repair wiring as necessary.
- If digits are displayed in odometer, repeat test starting sequence at step 1). If odometer shows an erroneous display, replace body control computer. Body control computer is located behind right kick panel.
- If CHECK is displayed in odometer, instrument cluster is in test mode. Continue test sequence by pressing US/MET button.
- If speedometer remains blank and CODE is displayed in odometer for 10 seconds, followed by one or all of Codes 900, 905, 920, 940and 999 being displayed at 3-second intervals, check CCD serial data bus line using DRB II. See appropriate TESTS W/CODES - BODY CONTROL COMPUTER article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
- If speedometer remains blank and CODE is displayed in odometer for 10 seconds, followed by Codes 921 and 999 at 3-second intervals, replace body control computer.
- If speedometer remains blank and CODE is displayed in odometer for 10 seconds, followed by Codes 110 and 999 at 3-second intervals, replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER R & I under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
- If speedometer remains blank and a CODE is displayed in the odometer for 10 seconds, followed by a Code 999, and original problem was not related to fuel gauge, proceed to step 12). Refer to CODE EXPLANATIONS (EXCEPT LEBARON SEDAN) .
- If original problem was related to fuel gauge, check for no fuel gauge reading and an asterisk flashing in instrument cluster. If cluster is as described, CCD serial data bus must be checked using DRB II. See appropriate TESTS W/CODES - BODY CONTROL COMPUTER article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
- If there is a fuel gauge reading with no flashing asterisk, locate body control computer Black connector behind right kick panel. Using ohmmeter, check resistance at fuel sending unit input signal pin of body control computer. This is pin No. 18 (Dark Blue or Dark Blue/Yellow wire) in Black connector of body control computer. See Fig 1 .
- If resistance is between 2-150 ohms, fuel sending unit input signal is correct. Replace body control computer. If resistance at fuel sending unit input signal pin is less than 2 ohms or exceeds 150 ohms, either wiring or fuel tank sending unit is defective. See FUEL SENDING UNIT & CIRCUIT TEST under TESTING. Repair or replace as required.
- If CODE and 999 are displayed, and original problem was not related to fuel gauge, press US/MET button. Individual lighted segments should display in sequence, then number "6" should display in speedometer. A visual retest of this sequence can be repeated by pressing TRIP RESET. If lighted segments in display appear shorted together, replace cluster. If all segments light up individually, press US/MET button to continue.
- Speedometer and odometer symbols should now display in sequence, then number "7" should display in speedometer. A visual retest of this sequence can be repeated by pressing TRIP RESET. If speedometer and odometer symbols glow at same time, symbols are shorted together. Replace instrument cluster.
- If speedometer and odometer symbols glow individually, press US/MET button to continue. WASHER fluid, DOOR/DECK, CHECK ENGINE, SEAT BELT, BRAKE and CHECK GAUGES lights should glow in sequence, then number "8" should display in speedometer.
- If only some warning lights display as described, check cluster for defective bulbs (DO NOT turn off ignition or test sequence will be canceled). Replace any faulty bulbs and retest by pressing TRIP RESET button. If only some warning lights display as described and all bulbs are good, replace instrument cluster.
- If warning lights display as described in step 14), instrument cluster is good. To return instrument cluster to normal operation, press US/MET button.
