Timing Chain: Removal
- Remove timing chain cover. See TIMING CHAIN COVER . Timing chain stretch should be checked to determine if component replacement is required.
- Place torque wrench on camshaft sprocket bolt. Proper amount of torque must be applied in direction of engine rotation. Apply 30 ft. lbs. (41 N.m) torque with cylinder heads installed or 15 ft. lbs. (20 N.m) with cylinder heads removed.NOTE: When applying torque to camshaft sprocket bolt, DO NOT allow crankshaft to move. It may be necessary to hold crankshaft also.
- Once torque is applied, position measuring scale at edge of timing chain so movement can be measured. Apply the same amount of torque in opposite direction and note amount of chain movement. If movement exceeds 1/8" (3.17 mm), replace timing chain.
- Rotate crankshaft to align timing marks. See Fig 1 . Remove camshaft sprocket bolt. Remove cup washer, camshaft sprocket, timing chain and crankshaft sprocket.
