Fuel Sending Unit R & I: Removal
- Relieve fuel system pressure. See FUEL SYSTEM in appropriate BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. Disconnect negative battery cable end. Raise vehicle. Prepare suitable gasoline holding container and long drain hose. Be ready to attach long drain hose to drain tube of sending unit before removing drain cap from sending unit. See Figure .
- While fuel is draining, remove fuel filler tube retaining screws from quarter panel gas fill opening. When gas has completely drained, disconnect all electrical connectors and fuel pump hoses.
- Using transmission jack to support fuel tank in vehicle, remove supporting straps. Lower tank enough to disconnect rollover valve hose on top of tank. Remove fuel filler metal tube from tank grommet. If necessary, remove right rear wheel to accomplish this.
- Using hammer and brass drift or punch, carefully tap lock ring counterclockwise to release lock ring and sending unit from tank. See Figure . Remove sending unit and large "O" ring from tank opening.
