Removal (All Others)

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Drain engine oil from crankcase and drain cooling system. Remove complete air cleaner assembly. Reference mark accelerator cable adjustment, disconnect and remove cable.
  2. Remove upper radiator hose. Remove A/C compressor drive belt. Disconnect all spark plug wires from distributor. Rotate crankshaft until No. 1 piston is at TDC of compression stroke. Index mark distributor rotor position to distributor housing, and distributor housing position to cylinder head. Remove distributor assembly from cylinder head.
  3. Remove rocker cover. Remove camshaft sprocket bolt and remove distributor gear. Remove camshaft sprocket and timing chain (together without separating chain from sprocket) and place it on top of camshaft sprocket holder. DO NOT  rotate crankshaft after camshaft sprocket is pulled away from camshaft. See Figure.
    NOTE: DO NOT  allow the timing chain to come off of camshaft sprocket.
  4. Loosen cylinder head bolts in 2 or 3 steps using sequence shown in Figure. Remove cylinder head assembly with manifolds attached.
