Camshaft, Rocker Arms & Rocker Arm Shafts: Removal
- Remove complete air cleaner assembly, breather hoses, and purge line (if equipped). Disconnect PCV hose and valve from rocker cover. Remove rocker cover and gasket.
- Rotate crankshaft so that No. 1 piston is at TDC of compression stroke. Ensure timing marks are aligned. See Figure. Disconnect spark plug wires and remove cap. Index mark distributor rotor position to distributor housing, and distributor housing position to cylinder head. Remove distributor assembly from cylinder head.
- Remove camshaft sprocket bolt and remove distributor gear. Pull camshaft sprocket and timing chain away from camshaft and place on top of camshaft sprocket holder. See Figure.CAUTION: DO NOT allow timing chain to come off of camshaft sprocket during removal. DO NOT rotate crankshaft after timing chain and sprocket are removed from camshaft.
- Install Auto-Lash Holder (MD998443) over end of rocker arm to retain auto-lash adjusters. See Fig 1. Mark location of components for reassembly reference. Remove camshaft bearing cap bolts, rocker arms and rocker shafts as an assembly. DO NOT allow components to separate during removal. Remove camshaft.
