Piston & Rod Assembly: Installation
- Ensure piston ring end gap and side clearance are both within specifications. Install rings on piston with ring code identification marks toward top of piston. Lubricate piston, rings and cylinder bore with engine oil.
- Properly space ring end gaps on piston. See Figure. Install piston and rod into cylinder bore. Ensure piston is installed with "FRONT" mark toward timing belt of the engine.
- Check rod bearing clearances using Plastigage method. Tighten rod cap nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table at end of article. Remove plastigage and prelube bearings before reassembling cap to rod. Ensure rod moves freely on crankshaft after each rod and piston has been installed. Check connecting rod side play. Repair or replace connecting rod if not within specification.
